Born in Hilpoltstein, Germany in 1969. From 1993 to 1998 he studied social sciences (communications science, sociology, psychology and economics) at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. Doctorate in communication science in November 2003 in Nuremberg (dissertation: economic reporting and elections). Habilitation with a venia legendi in communication science in January 2009 at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich. From 1998 to 2003 research assistant for Winfried Schulz in Nuremberg. From 2003 to 2007 research assistant for the project “intermedia” led by Hans-Bernd Brosius at the Institute for Communication Science and Media Research (IfKW Munich) at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich. From 2007 to 2009, research assistant for Romy Fröhlich at the IfKW Munich. Since 2009 professor at the Department of Communication at the University of Mainz. From 2011 to 2013, managing head of the Department of Communication. From 2008 to 2010, treasurer for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft (German communication association). From 2010 to 2014 vice president and from 2014 to 2018, president of the DGPuK. Winter term 2013/14, visiting scholar at the Institute for Journalism, Media and Communication Science at the Jagiellonen University of Krakow. April 2019: Visiting scholar at the Charles University of Prague.
