Prof. Dr.Sarah Neuwirth

I am a tenured Professor for Computer Science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), Germany. In addition to my responsibilities as a professor at the Institute of Computer Science, I am also responsible for the management and further development of JGU's High Performance Computing division, the coordination of HPC activities at regional and national levels and the representation of JGU in the committees of the NHR, the NHR South-West, and the Gauss-Allianz. I am also a Visiting Researcher at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, Germany. My research interests include parallel file and storage systems, modular supercomputing (i.e., resource disaggregation and virtualization), performance engineering, high performance computing and networking, reproducible benchmarking, parallel I/O, and parallel programming models. For my work in high performance computing, I have been awarded the "2023 PRACE Ada Lovelace Award for HPC" and the "ZONTA Science Award 2019".

Prior to joining JGU, I was the Deputy Head of the "Modular Supercomputing and Quantum Computing" Group at Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany and a postdoctoral research associate at Heidelberg University, Germany. In 2018, I completed my Ph.D. in Computer Science at Heidelberg University, Germany advised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Brüning. My Ph.D. has been greatly impacted by two summer internships at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA in 2015 and 2016 under the mentorship of Dr. Sarp Oral and Dr. Feiyi Wang, where I learned the aspects of identifying and addressing gaps in leadership HPC system software and hardware stacks by developing, hardening, and deploying experimental research and production-ready solutions. My current research has also been greatly impacted by the participation in the European research project series DEEP, where I focused on the resource disaggregation and virtualization of network-attached accelerators, and my continuous conference committee work ever since I joined SC’11 as a Student Volunteer.
